Thanks to feminism, the women’s rights movement, and the incredible work of so many strong and outspoken women who came before us, we’ve made significant strides in the pursuit of equal rights. Even in my own lifetime, experiences I was once told were “just the way things are” have shifted for the better, opening new paths for women, including myself. American women have achieved a certain level of equality, but equity still feels just out of reach. And let’s not forget—the progress we’ve made is constantly under threat. Right-wing ideology, paired with the silencing forces of movements like the Trad Wife Movement, endangers our voices, autonomy, freedom, and our lives. I’m not trying to scare you; this is just where we stand today. That said, we are still miles ahead of where we once were.

In the last few decades, we’ve learned a few essential truths. One of them is this: Despite what some groups in this country (and in countries around the world) would have you believe, women are absolutely not the weaker sex. We’ve also learned that whatever dreams or goals we choose to pursue, whether in sports, business, community, or family life, we are more than capable of achieving them. Women can thrive independently or within families. In fact, some research suggests that when women prioritize their own needs over those of men in their lives, they’re happier, healthier, and live longer. When given equal opportunities, women can compete with men in any arena. We are not “inferior,” nor are we merely “complementary” to men. Women are humans—whole and complete—with the exact wants, needs, and aspirations as anyone else.

That’s where The Sophisticated Poet comes in. Our mission is not exactly to teach women to decenter men; it’s to empower women to center themselves. In a world filled with complexity and constant change, we can’t possibly solve all the world’s problems or conflicts. But what we can do is focus on our own corners of the globe—bettering our own lives and, in turn, positively impacting those around us. Through thoughtful analysis, we aim to illuminate the complexities of modern society, challenge prevailing norms, and encourage meaningful conversations.
